IASS conference Amsterdam
sep 9, 2015
From August 17 to August 20 2015, Ed Saliklis attended the annual international conference of the IASS (International Association of Shell and Spatial Structures), in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Ed authored a pedagogical paper entitled “Teaching Structures Using Geometric Computation” which he presented to the first ever Teaching Working Group of the IASS. It was so well received that the IASS is exploring having Ed conduct a teaching workshop at next year’s conference in Tokyo.
Ed Saliklis was the lead author on a second paper co-authored by student Kion Nemati (B.S. ARCE 2015). This paper was presented by Kion in the IASS Working Group “Graphical Computation”.
This paper was entitled “Linking 2D to 3D Surfaces Using Geometric Computation and the Airy Stress Function”. The topic of the Airy Stress Function was extremely important in this year’s conference, several papers including one by Bill Baker of SOM Chicago, and one by Prof. Allan McRobie of Cambridge University. It is noteworthy that following our paper’s presentation, Prof. McRobie was enthusiastic about continuing a dialogue on this topic between Cambridge University and Cal Poly.
Finally, Ed Saliklis performed “Sum Together”, “I get M with a Little help from my V” and “All You Need is One” on the main stage of the Muziekgebouw. This was certainly a once in a lifetime opportunity.
