Open House 2016
apr 14, 2016 - apr 17, 2016
On April 14-17, the ARCE Department conducted its annual Open House celebration, where newly accepted and prospective students visited the Cal Poly campus. Department Head Al Estes offered a program overview in the KTGY Gallery on Friday afternoon where he welcomed students and their families to Cal Poly’s Architectural Engineering program. He explained the intricacies of the program and invited them to attend the rest of the weekend’s events.
On Saturday, the department offered displays of student work and activities in A-lab, the Hilti Lab and the Berg Gallery. Students led tours through the High Bay lab, concrete lab and seismic lab where students took a wooden box beam to failure on the universal testing machine, crushed a concrete cylinder, and demonstrated natural frequencies of buildings on the shake table.
The SEAOC student chapter operated a booth where they sold bratwurst lunches and ARCE merchandise. The ARCE freshmen taking their first year Architecture studios participated in the Design Village exercise where they designed shelters that they had to carry to Poly Canyon, erect and spend the night inside. Overall, it was a great weekend as the campus came to life and we demonstrated what the ARCE program is all about!
