Piedras Blacas Light House Shakes
aug 24, 2015
Professors Peter Laursen and Cole McDaniel were invited by Jim Harris of the Piedras Blancas Light House Station Association to shake the Piedras Blancas Light House in order to experimentally capture the fundamental periods and mode shapes. The light house is located about an hour north of Cal Poly, along highway one, near Hearst Castle. ARCE student Shannon Abeling also joined the site visit. Shannon is working with Shoreline Engineering of Morro Bay to create a 3-dimensional finite element model of the light house to study renovation options including restoring the top 30 feet of the light house that was removed after damage occurred in a 1948 earthquake. The analytical models and the experimental shaking results were closely correlated, providing confidence in the analytical model renovation studies.
