Structural Forum 2016 - "Pushing the Limits"
feb 20, 2016
In accordance with our annual tradition, the student chapter of SEAOC at Cal Poly hosted Structural Forum, a “no-resume” career fair in which Architectural Engineering students have the opportunity to network with structural engineering companies from all over the state and the country. The theme this year was “Pushing the Limits” and was composed of two sessions: the morning speakers and the job fair and networking dinner.
The morning section of the event was held in the Advanced Technology Laboratory on campus. Jason Krolicki, Associate Principal at Arup in San Francisco kicked off the morning session. Krolicki was integral in the structural design of the Vegas High Roller in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Observation Wheel is the new largest in the world, standing at a towering height of 550 m. Krolicki talked about the challenges and thrills of helping to build the new largest wheel in the world.
Concluding the morning presentations, Ashraf Habibullah, the President and CEO of Computer & Structures, Inc. gave an enthusiastic presentation on nonlinear structural analysis. Ashraf spoke about the direction of the structural engineering field towards the use of nonlinear structural analysis as a method of optimizing the capacity of structures. He concluded his speech by raffling off iPads, iWatches and other things, proving once again his incredible generosity towards the Cal Poly ARCE department and its students.
The job fair and the dinner portion of the event were held at the Madonna Expo Center for the second year in a row. John Magnusson from Magnusson Klemencic Associates, a structural and civil engineering consulting firm based in Seattle, Washington, spoke about the potential for innovation in the field of structural engineering and the opportunities to “Push the Limits.” Magnusson spoke about several of MKA's projects, like the Rufus 2.0 Spheres in Seattle, and the SkyRise in Miami, which required structural vision, creativity and originality. Overall the event was a huge success, with a record-breaking 42 structural engineering companies in attendance.
