Commencement & Order of the Engineer Ceremony
June 11, 2016
The ARCE Spring 2016 graduation took place on June 11th on Cal Poly’s campus. The large ceremony featuring the Colleges of Engineering and the College of Architecture took place in Spanos Stadium. All of the graduating ARCE students names were read and they were awarded their diplomas.
This year, the ARCE department hosted its very first, Order of the Engineer ceremony. The event was sponsored by Barrish Pelham. As part of the Order of the Engineer ceremony, a stainless steel ring was placed on the drawing hand of each of our graduating students, symbolizing their entrance into the structural engineering profession and their dedication to the profession. As part of the intimate department level graduation, each student crafted a 150 word tweet that was read as they walked across the stage to receive their ring. Al Estes presided over the ceremony, greeting each graduate and handing them their certificates as they walked across the stage. Ed Saliklis served as the Master of Ceremonies. We are grateful to ARCE staff members Erika Clements, Adriana Sousa, and Michael Salmon for organizing the event.

The last four weeks of the class were dedicated to analyzing, designing and constructing the Sears Tower. The tower contains over 20,000 pieces of K’Nex. Various strength tests were performed on the different K’Nex pieces to determine their limits for tension and compression. Potential failure points were also identified and the connection pieces in these regions were tested both in-plane and out-of-plane. The tower was a great learning experience for our students and a great example of Cal Poly’s “Learn by Doing” model which is implemented in every aspect of the ARCE department’s education philosophy.
